““At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.”
Genesis 3:7, 21
Notice Genesis 3.7, when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, their eyes were opened and they felt shame at their nakedness. This shame compelled them to sew fig leaves together and make coverings for themselves. Notice it was inward turmoil that caused them to make clothings to cover their shame.
Sin consciousness is the mother of all man made religions.
Adam made clothings of fig leaves to solve a spiritual problem. You cannot solve a spiritual problem with physical solutions. All man made religions focus on solving spiritual problems with physical solutions. Do you remember the Samaritan woman who had five husbands and still wasn’t satisfied – her spiritual thirst wasn’t satisfied.
People all around the world are trapped in spiritual death and sin consciousness which makes them pursue all the different man made religions of the world. All the man made religions – the best they can do is offer physical solutions because they are incapable of solving the spiritual void in humanity. Fig leaves cannot solve spiritual death and sin consciousness. Man cannot solve the spiritual problem by himself, He needs God.
The Lord God took away the fig leaves suit from Adam and Eve and made for them clothings of animal skin and covered them. In what God does, there are hidden glorious revelations. As you meditate, the Spirit of God will unfold it and light will come. Indeed, it is the glory of God to conceal a matter but it is the glory of kings to search it out.
I see the Father’s love – when He made clothings of animal skin for Adam and Eve. The Father sacrificed an animal and therefore it’s blood was spilled. The skin of the sacrificed animal was used as clothings for Adam and Eve. Do you think the Father was just thinking about clothing Adam and Eve? Does it have any spiritual implication? Is there a message the Father was conveying to Adam through this act of immense love for Adam and Eve? Let me show you the motive of the Father for doing what He did!
1. He wanted Adam to know man cannot save Himself. Only God can fix and restore what humanity has lost. So quit looking to yourself.
2. The fig leaves could only cover their physical bodies but couldn’t cover their shame and their guilt consciousness. After the fig leaves ,they would try something else and keep searching and keep trying because nothing physical can satisfy and fill the spiritual void in humanity.
3. The coats of animal skin was not just to cover their physical bodies but also to cover their spiritual condition. Atonement was provided when the animal was sacrificed. To atone means to cover. By the blood of the sacrificed animal, the transgression of Adam was covered. Can you see this? The fig leaves only covered their physical body but the coats of animal skins also covered their spiritual state of separation from God. Why would God do that? So that He can continue to bless them.
4. The coats of animal skins were also a reminder. A reminder that the seed of the woman would come and destroy the works of the devil. The Lamb of God would come and shed His blood, and by the sacrifice of Himself take away, not cover but take away the sins of humanity. The coats of animal skin on the bodies of Adam and Eve would help them to have limited and restricted fellowship with God and even receive from Him in a limited manner.
The coats of animal skins were a demonstration of the Father’s love for humanity. The curse came because of Adam’s mistake and the Lord God revealed to Adam what His transgression would bring forth. But then He because of His great love gave them coats of animal skins so that they could continue to enjoy God’s protection, His provision and His favour. Because of the coats of animal skins, Adam and Eve were declared righteous.
But for us as believers in Christ Jesus, we are not just declared righteous. We are made the righteousness of God in Christ because we are not in the coast of animal skin but Praise God we are in Christ!
