005. Word based Prayer

Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

Amos 3:3

Prayer is having fellowship with God. Enoch walked with God. The life of a believer is a journey of fellowship with the Holy Spirit. As you walk with God, you are to become more intimate with Him – so one with Jesus that the world sees Him in you.

If you are to walk with God, you have to agree with Him. The verse says, Can two walk together unless they are agreed? Well, the answer is No! No two people can walk together unless they agree with one another. You are to agree with God if you want to have an effective and productive fellowship with Him. The Lord made us in His image and His likeness so you and I, we could walk with Him. Therefore it is important for us to know and understand what His will is, what His likes and dislikes are and what His purposes, plans and pursuits are. Unless you know these things, how will you agree with Him?

The Word of God is the will of God. God and His Word is One.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Revelation 19:13

The Word of God is the will of God. The Bible reveals the desires, the plans, the purposes and the will of the Almighty God. Infact, Jesus is called the Word of God. Jesus and His Word is One. You cannot have fellowship with Jesus without having fellowship with His Word. Having fellowship with Jesus is having fellowship with His Word because Jesus and His Word is One. Agreeing with His Word is agreeing with Him. You can never know Him or His will without His written Word. How can a believer have fellowship with Jesus and never have fellowship with His Word? It is ignorance and simply impossible! He is one with His Word.

Walking in His Word is walking with Him. The written word of God is your point of agreement with the Lord. Without the Word, you will never know His will which will hinder your walk with Him. Remember, how can two walk together unless they are agreed?

When you pray according to the Word, you have God’s attention

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

I John 5:14‭-‬15

When does He hear you? According to these verses, the Lord hears you when you pray according to His will. What is His will? His Word is His will. So when you pray according to His Word, He hears you. When you pray according to His Word, you get His attention. Crying and shouting doesn’t get His attention. Nothing wrong with these expressions but the Lord gives His attention to His Word. Therefore if you desire His attention, get His Word. If you ask according to His Word, He hears you. Hallelujah!

Therefore you must devour the written word of God. Your walk with God depends on it. The answers to your prayers depend on it. Your communication with Him depends on it. He will never do anything that is against or outside of His will. Remember, the Lord and His Word is one. The honour you give to the written word of God is the honour you are giving to the Lord.

It is not enough to quote the Word, we must live in the Word.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

John 15:7

When you pray, you must pray according to God’s word. But it is not enough to quote it, you must abide in the Word. Jesus said, if my words abide in you, you will ask what you will and it will be done for you. He didn’t say, if you quote my words. He said if you abide in my words. Living in the Word would mean becoming one with the Word. The Word affects and influences your thinking, your speech and your behaviour. His desires and His plans becomes your desires and your plans. This oneness with the Word guarantees answers every single time you pray. You don’t just visit the Word, you live in the Word. Jesus guarantees answers to those who abide – make a permanent dwelling in His words.

Don’t pray blind prayers. The Word makes you certain and confident.

Without the Word, you don’t have any direction in prayer. Don’t pray with assumptions. When you don’t know the Word, you assume His will and pray with uncertainty and doubt. But when you know the Word, you know with certainty what His will is. You don’t beat around the bush. You pray confident and bold prayers knowing what His will is and knowing that He hears you. You cannot be ignored or denied. You know that the Lord will hear you and He will answer you for you have prayed according to His will – His Word.

And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the Lord and against His Christ.’ “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.”

Acts 4:23‭-‬30

Here is a group of believers praying to God according to His written Word. The Pharisees and chief priests had threatened them and warned them against preaching in the name of Jesus. Their threats and warnings didn’t make their prayer uncertain and doubtful. They knew the Lord’s will – His Word. Jesus had commissioned them to preach the gospel and He had warned them of the persecutions they would face in fulfilling the Great Commission. Therefore they prayed boldly, confidently and with certainty knowing they won’t be denied for they lived and walked on His Words.

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Acts 4:31

When Word people prayed according to the Word of God, the Lord heard them and answered their prayers. Hallelujah!
