001. What is Prayer

Pray without ceasing

I Thessalonians 5.17

Prayer is having fellowship with God. Prayer is not limited to a place or a specific time. Some think prayer is only done in a specific place or on a specific time. Some people only pray when they face a challenge or when they need something. Otherwise they will never pray. I want to present prayer to you with a different perspective – the Word perspective!

Prayer is having communion with God.

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Genesis 1:26

The Lord God created us in His image and His likeness so we could walk with Him. The purpose of creation was fellowship. Having fellowship with God is the key objective of creation. Whenever you hear the word prayer, remember it is talking about fellowship.

God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

I Corinthians 1:9

The word ‘fellowship’ is an interesting word. It comes from the Greek word ‘koinonia’. It is also used in other verses of the Bible.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

II Corinthians 13:14

Communion or koinonia refers to Oneness and Partnership.

According to the above verses, it refers to Oneness and Partnership with the Holy Spirit. Today the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer. Therefore, prayer is having fellowship with the Holy Spirit who lives in you. Look at what Jesus said in the following verses.

I and My Father are one.

John 10:30

Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.

John 14:10

These verses talk about His oneness and His partnership with the Holy Spirit who was in Him in His earthly walk.

Drawing close to Him and Knowing Him with the objective of becoming One with Him and walking with Him is Prayer.

If you only approach God when you are in trouble and when you need something, it would be selfish. God is merciful. He will help you in your trouble and give you whatever you need.

But as we grow, we must put childish things behind us and understand, Prayer is having constant fellowship with the Holy Spirit. It doesn’t matter whether you need something or not, whether you are in trouble or not, you are always in constant communion with God. It doesn’t matter what the location or what the time is. You are in constant touch with the third person of the God Head.

Therefore be conscious of His presence and acknowledge Him in all you do for He is always in you, with you and for you. Enquire of Him. Listen to Him. Give Him thanks. Lean and rely on Him. As you fellowship with the Holy Spirit, you will experience royal dominion in every area of your life.
