What is New Birth?

John 3:1‭-‬7
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

‘You must be born again’ These are the words of Jesus Christ. The new birth is the biggest miracle in your life. The only way you can enter God’s kingdom is by new birth.

This helps us understand why Christianity is not a religion. It’s not a set of do’s and don’ts as other major religions of the world. As you will see the meaning of new birth and why it’s needed, you will be able to decode the futility of religion.

What is New Birth?

Romans 10:9
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

When you confessed with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believed in your spirit that God raised Him from the dead, you were born again. When you believed the Word that was spoken to you, the Holy Spirit re-created your spirit and made it a new creature. Remember, you are a spirit, you have a soul and you live in a human body.

New Birth is the re-creation of your spirit by the Holy Spirit the moment you believed and received God’s word of salvation.

Notice, the Holy Spirit did not repair, modify or renovate your spirit. He did not give you a new religion. He re-created your spirit. He created something that never existed before. He created a new specie of beings. We have the man kind, animal kind, bird kind and the fish kind. However, there is another specie of beings, this is the New Creature.

So when Jesus was speaking to Nicodemus about being born again, He wasn’t talking about physical birth rather He was talking about spiritual birth. Nicodemus, being ignorant of spiritual realities, focused on how you could accomplish new birth physically.

Why New Birth?

Genesis 2:16‭-‬17
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Why do we need to be born again to enter God’s kingdom? Why should our spirits be recreated? Well, it all started in the Garden of Eden. The Lord commanded Adam not to eat from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But we know what happened, Satan deceived Eve and both, Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. The moment Adam ate the fruit, their eyes were opened and they knew they were naked. They knew they had lost something.

When God came to visit them at the cool of the day, Adam and Eve ran away from God and hid themselves among the trees of the garden. Mankind was created in the image and likeness of God. Adam had God’s image and was like God. When He committed high treason, He lost the image and likeness of God and therefore He lost fellowship with God.

Romans 5:19
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

Through His disobedience, He received the nature of Satan in His spirit. When Adam received demonic nature, mankind received demonic nature. Every human that is born in the world today has come through Adam and therefore by birth possesses demonic nature. You were born a sinner. You didn’t sin to be become a sinner. Your disobedience did not make you a sinner. Adam’s disobedience made you a sinner. By physical birth, we are sinners (we have sin demonic nature) and therefore we sin. You are trapped!

Genesis 3:7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

This verse reveals to us the introduction of religion. Adam is trying to solve a spiritual problem using fig leaves.

You cannot solve a spiritual problem with physical natural solutions. This is why no religion works.

This is man’s condition in Adam. No amount of good works. No amount of prayers. No amount of sacrifice. No amount of religious works. No amount of self discipline can rid you of this spiritual problem. Let me illustrate it this way, you can make a cat wear Levi jeans, Ray-Ban sunglasses and Clark’s boots but at the end of the day, a cat is a cat. Nothing you do on the outside can change her nature. I want you to see, no religion can save you because every religion focuses on natural, physical solutions.

Jesus said, You must be born again. The new birth is the only solution to mankind’s spirit problem and it’s only found in Jesus. Jesus didn’t come to set up a religion. He came to give you new life. He came to make dead people alive.

II Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

The old demonic nature passes away and the Holy Spirit makes you a new creature. This new creature has the life and the nature of God. Not only are your sins forgiven, but you have been made a new creature.

At New Birth,

• Your sins are wiped out by the blood of Jesus.
• Your old demonic nature passes away and you become a new creature in your spirit.
• You spirit has eternal life – the life and the nature of God because you are born again by the incorruptible seed of God’s Word. You have God’s DNA in your spirit.
• Your spirit is joined with the Holy Spirit and is oneness with Him. As the Holy Spirit works in you, He will begin to impact your behavior and make it Christ like.
• You can have unlimited and unending fellowship with God.
• You are made the righteousness of God in Christ – you are as right as Jesus is in the eyes of God.
• You are redeemed from the authority of darkness. Satan and His forces have no power over you. You have power and authority over Satan and all His forces.
• You have been raised up with Jesus Christ and you are seated with Him at God’s right hand in Christ.
• You are a child of God and God Almighty is your Father. You are in God’s family. By the Holy Spirit, you cry out, Abba, Father.
• You received the name of Jesus. You have the right and the authority to use His name.
• As God’s child, you received a huge inheritance the moment you were born in His family.
• You become a citizen of heaven. You are sent to the earth to fulfill your specific God given assignment.

This is why I say, new birth is the biggest miracle of your life. Many believers are ignorant of these realities.

John 1:12‭-‬13
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

You don’t receive new birth just because you are born in a Jesus believing family.

You can’t earn new birth by your will, hard work and sacrifices.

No priest, no pastor and no human can give you new birth. Baptism cannot give you new birth. Joining a church cannot give you new birth.

New Birth is for those who receive Jesus. These are the ones who are born of God. Born again also means born from above. You have come from above because God your Father is above. You are born of God who is a spirit. Spirit gives birth to spirit. You are a heavenly person. You are a spiritual being.

New Birth is a gift, given to those who take their trust away from their works and put it on the person and the works of Jesus Christ. Only in Him, you receive a new nature. The Father first gives you His nature. This nature then begins to affect your behavior. Religions tries to change the behavior, instead of the nature. You cannot change the nature by working on the behavior, remember the cat with Levi jeans. This is why religion is so frustrating. This new nature – God’s nature must dominate our minds and bodies so we can live effective Christ lives and demonstrate the Love of Christ to this dying world.

You are victorious in Christ.
